Seeds are cheaper than plants and far more fun. A bright windowsill, a tray with holes and a thin layer of compost is all you need. Sow two seeds per cell, cover lightly and water from below so nothing washes away.

About the author

Hi, I’m Ilse. My first garden was four pots and a wobbly chair.

Eleven years ago I moved into a third-floor flat with a balcony the size of a doormat. I killed a lot of basil that first summer. Then I started keeping notes: what grew, what sulked and what I would do differently.

Those notes became the Wildacre garden letter, and now this little book. Everything in it has been tested in pots, on a windy balcony, by someone with a day job.
